FAQs about counseling, and finding therapy in Seattle

You’ve been searching and found a few therapists in Seattle that seem like a good fit. The options can be overwhelming at times. If you’ve never been to therapy or you’ve been many times, it’s okay to have questions. Here are some answers to get you started.

What is a therapy?

Therapy is a treatment process rooted in a relationship with a provider trained to identify, reflect, and assist in tackling life challenges.

What is counseling?

Counseling is about providing guidance and space to address life challenges.

Wait…are counseling and therapy in Seattle the same thing?

Yes, if those definitions sound similar, it’s because they are. Therapy, counseling, psychotherapy, they all are used interchangeably at least in Washington state. Other places the language may be a bit different.

What about coaching? Is a coach what I need over a therapist in Seattle?

Coaching typically deals with people looking to meet specific goals or outcomes and generally aren’t suffering. Coaching assumes the client is starting at neutral ground. They often target a specific issue such as a dating coach or a business coach. They cannot diagnose or treat any mental health issues. Therapy tends to look at your life as a whole and work towards helping you alleviate suffering. Therapists can do what coaches do, coaches can’t do what therapists can do. Depending on your goals and needs, one service may be more appropriate at the time. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have further questions about what might most help you.

Wait, what about LCSW, LMFT, Psychologists, LMHC, etc.? What do I need?

All of those licenses practice therapy in different ways. What is most important is that you feel connected to your provider and have hope they can help.
