You’re continuing on your search for a therapist, counselor, or psychologist in Seattle. You’ve touched base with a few therapists in Seattle that seem fine. They all offer a consultation but you don’t know what if anything you’re supposed to know or ask. Don’t stress, here’s some guidance:

Questions to ask a therapist in Seattle

Here are a list of questions you can ask a therapist while you’re exploring if you’ll work together. I encourage you to make a list before the consultation and keep it with you so you don’t forget.

  • Can you tell me about your educational background? Not only will you learn about their specific license, but post-graduate school, therapists, counselors and psychologists get additional training to specialize in different areas.

  • Who do you enjoy working with the most? This can help you know if this person is right for your needs! Same with the next question.

  • What are your specialties?

  • After hearing some of what I’m struggling with, how can you help? The therapist should be able to give you a rough idea of how they’ll specifically be able to help.

  • How often should I come to therapy? Most people have an average for specific issues.

  • How long will it take to see results?

  • What happens if therapy isn’t working? It’s important your therapist can take feedback and is open to collaboration, referral or other changes if you aren’t getting what you need.
